Developmental Milestones for Your 6-Month Old

Remember that every child develops at a different pace.  So, not every child will be able to perform all of the following skills.  However, if your child or a child that you know is lacking in a great number of these developmental milestones, please contact your Regional Service Coordinator to arrange a free evaluation.

By 6 Months Old I Can:
  • Hold my head up and look all around
  • Recognize familiar faces and smile at you
  • Coo, giggle, and make lots of sounds
  • Push up on my hand and knees
  • Roll from my back to my stomach and from my stomach to my back
  • Pick up objects
  • Love to be held and cuddled
  • Search (look) for sounds, turn head towards sound
    • Soft sounds will get my attention

To Help Me Develop and Keep Me Healthy, My Family Can:

  • Baby-proof everything
  • Let me nap 2 or 3 times a day
  • Look at colorful books with me
  • Rock, hold, and cuddle me frequently
  • Talk to me and play with me
  • Give me colorful and safe toys to touch and hold
  • Don't leave me alone on things I can roll off of
  • Continue to feed me what the Doctor has advised (juice and iron-fortified cereal may be recommended)
  • My first teeth are starting to come in - cool, non-liquid filled teething rings may provide teething comfort
  • Fluoride is important for my new teeth
    • Check with our Dentist and the local water company for levels of fluoride in the water supply
  • Keep me protected from the sunshine
  • Continue to use my car seat in the back of the car
