About the Early Development Network

Babies Can't Wait
"Many things we need can wait; a child cannot.
Now is the time his bones are being formed,
His blood being made, his body being developed.
To him, we cannot say, 'tomorrow.'  His name is today."
--Gabriella Mistral

If a child's growth or learning is slower than that of other children the same age, it is best to check it out as soon as possible.  The same is true if a child has a health condition that could be long-lasting.  Children may need extra services and support to develop properly.  That is where the Early Development Network comes in.  The Early Development Network is supported through the collaborative efforts of the Nebraska Department of Education and the Nebraska Health and Human Services System.

If you have concerns about a child's development, contact your Early Development Network representative for a FREE evaluation.  If the child qualifies, free services may be available for children from birth to age three.  These services are very important to ensuring that the child progresses in the best possible way and will be better prepared for success when starting school.

What happens next?
With the family's permission, a referral is made by anyone concerned about the child's development.  This referral will go to a Services Coordinator within the region, who will contact the family within seven days to determine if they are interested in Early Development Network services.

With the family's permission, the Services Coordinator will arrange for an assessment with the local school district to determine the unique needs of the child and his or her eligibility.  If the child qualifies, the Services Coordinator will help the family develop an Individualized Family Services Plan, which sets goals for the child and the family and identifies activities and services needed to achieve those goals.  Families may choose a particular service or all services.  Families also may refuse services at any time.
