Teaching Materials for "DAS BOOT"

The following materials have been developed for use with the original version of "DAS BOOT." The unit can be used as a 9-day or as a 10-day sequence, given class periods of approximately 50 minutes each. I have always used this film in my German II classes, so the students are usually a mix of freshmen to seniors.

I change and add bits & pieces each time I teach this unit, so what you see posted here is the basic outline. Naturally, you will need to adapt this material for your own teaching situation. You are welcome to use any or all of what you find on this page; I would, however, ask that you credit my name somewhere if you choose to use these resources.

Many of the files are in .pdf format, which means you need Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer. If you don't have it, you can download it for free.

An article by Ken Ringle, Washington Post Staff writer, published Sunday, April 22, 2001. "Captured U-Boat captain Werner Henke was branded a war criminal and shot like a dog. So why is someone putting flowers on his grave?"

This would be a good supplemental article for students to read before taking the final unit exam over "Das Boot."
