Check this page to find out what happened on the day that you were absent. Talk to a classmate, or e-mail Frau Penner, if you have questions on any of the material covered on the day you missed. If you need to make up a test or a quiz, please remember that it is your responsibility to arrange a time to do so. Reviewing and studying vocabulary is a standing assignment!
Keine Schule heute!
Montag, d. 30.04.01: Geburtstage und Geschenke!
Read C9 and C10 on p. 315 in your textbookBe able to tell when your birthday is, using a complete sentence. Look at this example and then practice out loud!
- Frau Penner: Ina, wann hast du Geburtstag?
- Ina: Ich habe am zwanzigsten Mai (20. Mai) Geburtstag.
For our purposes in German II:
- Don't use "ist" when asking or telling when a birthday is (Mein Geburtstag ist ...)
- Don't use a possessive to talk about when birthdays occur (Mein Geburtstag....)
- Don't use "of" when you give the date (2nd of December)
Be able to tell me when your name day is! If your name didn't appear on the Namenstag list you received in class today, follow the steps listed below. If you still can't find your name day, be able to tell me "I don't have a name day." (You'll have to use "kein" in your sentence.)
- Click on http://www.kirchenweb.at/wien/20.htm
- Scroll down a little bit until you see a dark blue chart. On the last row of the chart, you will find the word "Namenstage." Click there.
- When the new page appears, click on the words "Klicke dazu bitte hier!"
- When the new page appears, scroll down until you get to a chart titled "Vornamen u. Namenstage für Knaben" (boys) or "Vornamen u. Namenstage für Mädchen."
- Click on the letter that your name starts with. You may use either your real name or your German name.
- If there is a date beside your name, that's your Namenstag!
- Write down the information you found here, and bring it to class on Tuesday!
Geben is a new verb that we'll work with this week. Memorize the forms of this verb; they are found on p.304 in your textbook.
Complete your "Geschenkliste" that we started at the end of class today. Bring it with you tomorrow.

Mittwoch, d. 09.05.01
Students involved in
track on Thursday should be sure to read through tomorrow's
assignment notes before leaving class today. Read through everything,
even if it seems like a repeat of today's information.
Frau Penner will be in Ogallala today and tomorrow. You will be working on your EOY project in the computer lab. Your primary focus should be working on the text for your PowerPoint presentation, not the PowerPoint presentation itself. By the beginning of the class period on Friday, you should have a first draft for a good portion of the writing that you plan to include on your PowerPoint slides. You should use the entire class period today and tomorrow to work on writing; you should also consider this your homework assignment for tonight and tomorrow night.
Remember that you should not have to refer to a dictionary for this assignment. Frau Penner is looking to see how well you can use the material you studied and learned in German I-II. Feel free to use your textbook, and any of the materials in your class notebook. Vorsicht! Using an online translator will result in an automatic zero.
Please follow these guidelines when you word process your text:
- Name your Word file [lastname]_writing
- Save your Word file in your [lastname]_German folder located in your student directory.
- Click here to look at an example of how you should organize your first draft. Please bring a printed copy of your writing file with you to class on Friday; you will be asked to turn it in for credit.
Note: I will be checking your directories Friday before class and looking at your [lastname]_writing file. If you don't have anything saved there (or not enough to represent two full class periods of work time), it will not be good news for your participation grade....
Before you all sit down at a computer to starting writing, each family should meet as a unit. The adults in each family must choose a profession from the following list. Please notice that you will not use "a" or "an" in front of the name of your profession: "Ich bin Deutschlehrerin." "Mein Vater ist Landwirt."

Naming & Saving your first draft Word file:

Please bring a printed copy of your writing file with you to class on Friday; you will be asked to turn it in for credit. Note: If you work on this assignment at home tonight, and you do not have access there to a computer, bring your additional handwritten pages to class on Friday. This information will eventually need to be word-processed, but it can be turned in for credit in handwritten form.
- Remember: You can import your Word document into PowerPoint, so you will not need to re-type everything!

Students took the last map quiz of the year, did some proofreading, reviewed past tense, and played a few rounds of vocabulary BINGO.

- Note: Grades pages will be updated after you take today's "past tense" quiz. They will not be updated again until I am able to record your final quarter and semester grade.
