The Berlin Wall

• The Berlin Wall: A site (in English) with numerous links. Answer the following questions:
  • In what month and in what year was the Berlin Wall erected?
  • At what time of day did the East German Government begin building the Wall?
  • What was the name of the East German leader who signed the commands to close the border between East & West?
  • When was the border between East and West Berlin re-opened?

   

• Find out about the East Side Gallery, an open-air museum where part of the Wall is still preserved. How long is this stretch of the Wall? (Write the answer on your Guide sheet.) Look particularly at Photo #4 to get an idea of what the Wall used to look like from the western side.

• What did the East German government have to say about the Berlin Wall? Read the text of a 1962 brochure defending the existence of the Wall. It was published in English for foreign distribution. (There are no specific questions that you need to answer for this, but it's interesting reading.)
