Class participation is one of the most important factors when it comes to earning your grade! How well and how often you participate in class is just as important as tests & quizzes. In fact, along with being prepared and doing your homework regularly, it counts a full half of your average grade!

PREPARATION FOR CLASS

+4 I follow class discussions and always concentrate during practice sessions, whether the whole class is practicing together or in smaller groups. I'm always prepared to participate in class. (Like that means I've always done my homework beforehand, I work through all examples mentally, I try to answer questions in my head even if the teacher doesn't call on me....)

+3 I follow class discussions pretty well, and I usually concentrate when we practice in class, too. I'm usually prepared to participate in class.

+2 I try to follow class discussions, and I usually try to concentrate when we practice in class. I listen to other students' answers, but I can't say I try to answer all the questions in my head if Frau Penner calls on someone else. As far as being prepared to participate ... well, I am sometimes! I do my homework, but I'm not sure I actually concentrate on it. Mostly I'm just anxious to get it done quickly.

+1 I don't always follow class discussions; it seems I just can't concentrate on them or what we practice on in class. Do I prepare myself mentally for what we do in class? Well, not really - or at least, hardly ever. I'm just glad if I can get the homework done!

+0 I hate to admit it, but I don't make much of an effort to follow class discussions. And it's really hard to concentrate on this stuff we're supposed to do in class. It's boring - and I just can't see that I will ever use this. I really never prepare myself mentally for this class ...I just kind of grab my books, walk in and sit down. If Frau Penner calls on me - fine, I'll try to answer. If not, all the better.

HOW OFTEN I PARTICIPATE IN CLASS

+4 I volunteer and offer to respond in class all the time!

+3 I volunteer and offer to respond in class often.

+2 I sometimes offer to respond in class, but mostly I'd rather wait until the teacher calls on me.

+1 I don't volunteer or offer to respond in class very often at all. Hardly ever, actually. I don't talk much unless the teacher calls on me specifically.

+0 I never volunteer in class. Even if the teacher calls on me specifically, I don't say much.

QUALITY OF PARTICIPATION IN CLASS

+4 I really try to say what I want or need to say "auf Deutsch." I try to talk in "paragraphs' - like more than one single sentence at a time. And I use complete sentences and phrases, too - not just single words or bits & pieces of sentences. It's not like my answers are always perfect, but I'm always trying to make progress and use the stuff we've been learning in class.

+3 I can successfully respond in complete German sentences. It's really hard to talk in "paragraphs" though. Seems like I'm constantly searching for a word that I don't have or can't remember. But I am trying! I even take notes or look up words so that I'll have them handy next time.

+2 I usually TRY to answer with complete German sentences, but I can't always manage that.

+1 This is a pretty workable approach: I've learned a couple of standard words and phrases in German, and I usually just pull those out of my hat when I think I "need" to say something in German. If those particular words and phrases don't work, then I either don't talk, or I use English.

+0 I don't make much of an effort to respond in German.

USING GERMAN IN CLASS & DURING PAIR / GROUP ACTIVITIES

+4 I try to use German all during the class - just as much as I can. I really work at during pair and group activities, and if we finish before the rest of the group, I try to use those few extra minutes for extra practice. If I need to borrow a pencil or have a question about what we're doing, I always try to ask in German. And once I start something like that in German, I try to keep going in German for as long as I can.

+3 I usually try to use quite a bit of German when I'm talking with the teacher, and sometimes with my classmates, too. But once we're done with the regular class - or if we've finished with a pair/group activity - it's really hard NOT to switch back to English.

+2 I sometimes try to use German in class., but it's not a real big issue for me. I

+1 I try to use some German....but even if I get started a little bit in German, I often switch to English (especially if I don't think the teacher can hear me). It just seems a lot easier and faster to use English.

+0 I mostly use English in class when I talk with my classmates or with the teacher.

ACCURACY

+4 My German is pretty accurate for the level that I'm at. It's not like it's perfect, but I do make a conscious effort to think about how I put sentences together. It's hard for me to judge, 'cuz I'm the student and not the teacher, but I think I do pretty well on using correct vocabulary and getting subjects & verbs to match up. My word order is correct most of the time. It's fun - I kinda feel like I'm getting the hang of it!

+3 I 'm really trying, and although I do make some mistakes, my German is often pretty accurate (considering the level that I'm at). I watch out for mistakes, and correct them myself whenever I can. And if the teacher corrects me, I really concentrate on not making that mistake again.

+2 I hope that what comes out of my mouth is reasonably correct. I think about trying to make it correct, but mostly I'm just glad if I can SAY something!

+1 I know I make a lot of mistakes when I speak....even on stuff that we've really practiced and concentrated on in class. Like I keep getting my verb endings mixed up, or the words seems to end up in the wrong order. There are just too many things to keep straight! This is impossible!

+0 I make a lot of errors when I speak German. I don't think a native German speaker could understand me most of the time. .

Your score figures out to a C.

You've got the basic approach right, and a little extra effort could really make a difference for you! Be sure to talk with Frau Penner if you have questions or need some extra help.

Careful....your score only adds up to a D.

You need to concentrate on using more German in the classroom. Remember that participation, along with preparation, accounts for half of your class average. Talk with Frau Penner if you have questions or need some extra help.

If you scored 11 points or fewer, you are not maintaining a passing grade in the oral participation category. Since participation and preparation together make up 50% of your grade, your overall class average could be in jeopardy.

Please make an appointment to talk to Frau Penner .
