You will receive daily performance grades throughout each quarter. I expect that every German student will prepare thoroughly for each class and will come to class willing to take an active part. Participation grades will be based on the rubric at the bottom of this page.

What happens if you meet all of the requirements for a "B" except the one about "You use your class time to work on and practice German." You generally are very good about using individual time to complete assignments, but once the assignment is finished, you almost always visit with friends or work on other subjects. Do you get the "B?" No, you must meet ALL the requirements for a "B" in order to get a "B." Your participation grade in this instance would be a "C."

You're doing an exceptionally good job!
  • You help keep activities in class moving in the right direction. I can depend on you to do more than your part whether you're working individually or in a group. Your enthusiasm for and your positive attitude toward learning German are contagious, and you often inspire your classmates to do more than they thought they could in German!
  • You pay attention and take part actively & appropriately during the entire class.
  • You make a sincere effort to use German to communicate whenever you can. You use German for routine class requests; you apply what we've learned to situations outside of the textbook; you are curious about the language.
  • You use your time in class to work on and practice German.
  • You don't mess around or waste time in class. You are not a distraction to other students.

You're doing well! (expected standard for ALL students)
  • You participate appropriately in both group and individual activities.
  • You pay attention during class.
  • You generally use your time in class to work on and practice German.
  • You use German fairly often; Frau Penner only has to remind you about that once in a while.
  • You don't mess around or waste time in class. You are not a distraction to other students.

You're not quite to the standard....
  • You participate in required activities, but your participation has little negative OR positive effect on the class and its progress.
  • You may be grappling with the ideas presented in class, but your oral participation shows limited evidence of learning and applying new material.
  • You generally come to class with your homework completed, but you tend to contribute only when called upon directly.
  • You use German when the teacher calls on you, but you use a lot of English in class otherwise.
  • You use your class time to work on German assignments, but when the assignment is complete, you usually work on something else or visit with friends.
  • You are not a distraction to other students.

You do not meet participation standards.
  • You do not participate willingly in required activities, often requiring frequent direct supervision. It is difficult for you to stay "in German."
  • Your oral participation indicates limited vocabulary and/or difficulty using and applying new material.
  • You often come to class unprepared, and so it is difficult for you to participate. Although you are sometimes able to respond appropriately when called on, many answers are incomplete, inaccurate, or peppered with "Germlish."
  • Your disruptive behavior makes learning difficult for others
  • Frau Penner has to reminds you frequently to use your time in this class to focus on German. Even then, you find it difficult to do so.
  • Other than a few stock memorized phrases, you hardly ever use German to communicate.
