Center-based Learning Opportunities

Educational Service Unit No. 5 is very excited to provide center- based learning opportunities for schools.  In these classes, the teachers reside at the Educational Service Unit No. 5 and provide the class via distance learning systems.  Presently there are two course offerings: Spanish and Science.

Spanish has been available to schools for the past 5 years.  Interactive curriculum has been developed for levels 1-6, with a kindergarten curriculum to come soon.  At this time 4 center-based instructors are serving nearly 2,500 elementary students in 15 schools throughout southeast and northeast Nebraska.  Classes are occurring weekly for approximately 25 minutes.  For the past two years one center-based instructor has also served two schools for Level 1 and 2 High School Spanish.  The Spanish program is designed to introduce students to conversations Spanish and cultural activities.

Science began two years ago with one teacher serving ten classes at the 5th grade level (approximately 200 students).  In the second year of the program two science teachers are now serving 48 classes at the 5th and 6th grade (approximately 800 students).  Classes have been bi-weekly for 30-40 minutes.  Next year, classes will be offered at the 5th and 6th grade levels on a weekly basis.  The 3rd and 4th grades will also be offered science through the distance learning system, but not on a weekly basis.  Science curriculum is built to utilize current technology (chromakey, mobi, etc.) in a hands-on, inquiry based method.  A big part of the science program, in addition to teaching the standards based content, is to make science exciting for kids so that they will want to take science classes or go into science based professions.
