Southeast Nebraska Teachers Solve BP Oil Spill Dilemma

June 14, 2010

Throughout the month of June Mondays have been reserved as Science Mondays on which ESU #5 Science teachers, Matt Gerber and Dave Henning will be conducting staff development opportunities for science teachers of grades 6-12.  These teachers are being exposed to multiple hands-on, inquiry based science activities that they are then able to utilize within their own classrooms during the coming school year.

During the Science Mondays, teachers are presented with problems – such as the BP oil spill, or how to build a community and recreational region along a flowing river so that it does not erode or flood.  Staff then work in teams to devise a plan and then utilize materials supplied in order to build a small scale model of their plan to test.  Providing students with these same types of activities could greatly increase students’ scientific knowledge and problem solving skills!
